Schoenberg's Pierrot Lunaire is nothing short of a music theatre landmark. A strikingly significant work, it launched the career of Hebrides Ensemble some twenty years ago. Awestruck by its originality, Stravinsky hailed it 'the solar plexus of the 20th century'.
Pierrot is intoxicated by the moon, alone in his disturbed and insular world, he spirals into a violent nightmare dominated by dark poetic imagery, descending further into murderous and violent thoughts before returning home, once more transfixed by the moonlight.
This seminal work had Berlin audiences captivated, spellbound by Pierrot at the 1912 premiere. Written during a period of Expressionism and at the height of the composer's friendship with Kandinsky, the work is full of unusual combinations of instruments. Its originality in borrowing from the past whilst creating a unique hybrid of artistic expression still sounds highly modern today.
This programme, including works by Chopin, Debussy, Beamish and a brand new commission by young Scottish composer Helen Grime, takes Schoenberg's main protagonist Pierrot, a character from the Italian Commedia dell'arte, and draws parallels both real and imagined, between these two iconic figures.
Speaking of her performance of Pierrot Lunaire in 1996, Bjork hailed it as 'an amazing experience'. Don't miss this exciting new production by Hebrides Ensemble and German actress Sylvie Rohrer.
