PIERROT LE FOU (15)
SUN 26 July 2009
France/Italy
1965
109 mins (In French with subtitles)
Director: Jean-Luc Godard
Starring: Jean-Paul Belmondo, Anna Karina
Godard’s tenth film in five years is also his farewell to the New Wave tradition, before moving on to more experimental fare.
On impulse, Ferdinand (Belmondo) abandons his dull, bourgeois marriage to take off with his young babysitter Marianne (Karina) on a wild and eventually tragic adventure involving fast cars, gangsters and the Mediterranean sun. Godard draws on his fascination with American B-movie noir, spontaneously combining elements of thriller, comedy, music and romance into one of his finest films.
