LE DOULOS (12A)
SUN 05 July 2009
French New Wave 50th Anniversary
France/Italy
1962
108 mins (in French with subtitles)
Director: Jean-Paul Melville
Starring: Jean-Paul Belmondo, Serge Reggiani, Jean Desailly, Rene Lefevre
Jean-Pierre Melville was an important role model for the directors of the French New Wave, his style of filming, love of the American genre film, and independence from the French cultural elite of the time (who were despised by the Cahiers du Cinéma critics turned directors) became the basis of the films to come that would change cinema.
Gangster Silien (Belmondo), who may have been responsible for squealing on Faugel (Reggiani),has just been released from prison and is already involved in what should have been a simple heist. But in this brutal, twisting, and multilayered thriller, who is there to trust? Directed with Melville's trademark cool and featuring masterfully stylized dialogue and performances, Le doulos (slang for "informant") is one of the filmmaker's most gripping crime dramas.
