BBC SSO British-born Andrew Manze has established a reputation as one of the most stimulating and energetic conductors of his generation. Here he opens and closes the programme with two works by Brahms. The Tragic Overture, composed in 1880, has no particular drama in mind, but perhaps evokes the mood of high tragedy in general. The shadow of Beethoven loomed heavily over Brahms, resulting in the 15-year gestation of his First Symphony, only finished in his early forties - but what a masterpiece. To complete the evening Stella McCracken, principal oboe with the BBC SSO, plays Mozart’s sublime Oboe Concerto.
